Typing Speed Test

Measure your typing speed in words per minute (WPM) with raw and adjusted accuracy. Choose 15, 30, 60, or 120-second tests and track mistakes letter-by-letter in real time.

How WPM is calculated

A "word" in typing tests is conventionally defined as five characters, including spaces and punctuation. This standard goes back to mechanical typewriter days and lets short and long words contribute fairly.

Raw WPM counts every character you typed, mistakes included. It represents pure speed.

Net WPM only counts characters that ended up correct. It rewards accuracy and penalizes typos that you left uncorrected.

Typical WPM benchmarks

  • 20–35 WPM: Beginner. Hunting and pecking, looking at the keyboard.
  • 40–55 WPM: Average adult typist. Touch typing with occasional glances.
  • 60–80 WPM: Proficient. Comfortable for office and writing work.
  • 90–120 WPM: Fast. Common among programmers, journalists, transcriptionists.
  • 120+ WPM: Competitive. Top 1% of typists.

Tips for getting faster

  • Touch-type with all ten fingers on the home row. Looking down breaks rhythm and caps your ceiling.
  • Prioritize accuracy first. Speed without accuracy is just retyping, which is slower in real workflows.
  • Practice short, focused 1–2 minute sessions daily. Long marathon sessions tire your hands.
  • Use a keyboard you enjoy. Comfortable key feel reduces strain and lets you sustain pace.
