How exchange rates work
Most major currencies — the US dollar, euro, pound, yen, Swiss franc — float freely, meaning their price against other currencies moves continuously with supply and demand on the foreign-exchange market. Other currencies are pegged to a major one (the Hong Kong dollar to the USD, the Danish krone to the EUR) or are managed floats where a central bank intervenes inside a band.
The number you see quoted by Reuters or on this page is the mid-market rate: the midpoint between what banks pay to buy a currency (the bid) and what they charge to sell it (the ask). It is the rate before any markup.
The rate you actually receive at a bank, ATM, money changer, or on a credit card is almost always worse — typically 0.5% to 4% worse, plus any flat fee. That difference is the retail spread, and it is how the institution makes money on the conversion.
About these rates
Live rates are sourced from Frankfurter, a free open-source API that republishes the European Central Bank’s daily reference rates. They update once per business day around 16:00 CET and do not change on weekends or ECB holidays. If the live source is unavailable when this page is built we fall back to cached reference values.
These are reference rates only — your bank, card issuer, or remittance provider will use a slightly different rate plus their own fee. For high-value transfers compare a few providers; the difference can easily be 1–3% of the amount.

Tip — don’t pay a 3% markup if you don’t have to
For travel and online purchases, compare your card’s FX fee to the mid-market rate shown here. Many no-foreign-transaction-fee cards convert within ~0.5% of the mid rate; legacy bank cards and airport bureaux can add 3% or more on top. On a $2,000 trip that is the difference between $10 and $60+ in pure conversion cost. Also avoid “dynamic currency conversion” offers at foreign ATMs and merchants — choose to be charged in the local currency, not your home currency.
